I bought this before a trip and ended up reading it cover to cover twice. The way it traces Tuscany from Etruscan through Renaissance art and architecture gives real context instead of just pretty pictures.

The photos of the timeworn churches and Etruscan ruins are gorgeous, and the text actually explains the history instead of just captioning pretty pictures. I've been using it as a slow weekend read with coffee, one region at a time.

The chapter on Etruscan and Roman influences gave me a much better sense of how layers of history built up in the region. I only wished the modern architecture section was longer, since it felt a bit rushed compared to the Renaissance pages.
